too and enough

The rule

too means more than you want: it is too expensive, the bag is too heavy. enough means as much as you need — and it goes AFTER the adjective but BEFORE the noun: it is not big enough, we do not have enough time. too many and too much work like many and much.

Pattern

too + adjective · adjective + enough · enough + noun · too much / too many

Examples

  1. This jacket is too small for me.

  2. The bag is not big enough.

  3. We do not have enough chairs.

  4. I put too much salt in the soup.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: The bag is enough big.

    Right: The bag is big enough.

    enough goes after the adjective.

  • Wrong: We have chairs enough.

    Right: We have enough chairs.

    enough goes before the noun.
