The rule

German has one word for I, one for we — and three for "you". du for one person you know, ihr for several people you know, Sie (always capitalised) for anyone else. Getting this wrong is not a grammar mistake; it is a social one.

Examples

  1. Ich komme aus Syrien.

    I come from Syria.

  2. Woher kommst du?

    Where do you come from?

  3. Er wohnt in Bremen.

    He lives in Bremen.

  4. Woher kommen Sie?

    Where do you come from? (formal)

Keep in mind

  • sie = she / they · Sie = you (formal)

    Only the capital letter tells them apart in writing.
