The rule

Three little words, one each: am for a day (am Montag), um for a clock time (um acht Uhr), im for a month (im Mai). No preposition at all for heute, morgen, gestern.

Pattern

am Montag · um acht Uhr · im Mai · heute (ohne Präposition)

Examples

  1. Am Montag habe ich einen Termin.

    On Monday I have an appointment.

  2. Der Kurs fängt um neun Uhr an.

    The course starts at nine.

  3. Ich bin im Mai geboren.

    I was born in May.

  4. Am Wochenende schlafe ich lange.

    At the weekend I sleep in.
