The rule

Nine prepositions — in, an, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen — take either case, and the sentence decides. Movement TO a place (wohin?) takes the accusative; being AT a place (wo?) takes the dative. Ich gehe in die Küche (going) versus Ich bin in der Küche (being).

Pattern

wohin? → Akkusativ · wo? → Dativ

Examples

  1. Ich gehe in die Küche.

    I go into the kitchen.

  2. Ich bin in der Küche.

    I am in the kitchen.

  3. Stell das Glas auf den Tisch.

    Put the glass on the table.

  4. Das Glas steht auf dem Tisch.

    The glass is on the table.

  • Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand. · Das Bild hängt an der Wand.

    Hanging it up is movement; hanging there is position.
