The rule

These four glue two sentences together: en (addition), maar (contrast), want (reason), of (choice). The convenient thing about them is that they change NOTHING about the order — both halves stay ordinary main clauses with the verb in second place. Ik ben ziek en ik kan niet komen.

Pattern

[hoofdzin] en / maar / want / of [hoofdzin]

Examples

  1. Ik ben ziek en kan niet komen.

    I am ill and cannot come.

  2. Ik wil komen, maar ik heb geen tijd.

    I want to come, but I have no time.

  3. Ik blijf thuis, want ik ben ziek.

    I am staying home, because I am ill.

  4. Komt u vandaag of morgen?

    Are you coming today or tomorrow?
