English grammar

Questions and no with do

A0 · Starter Asking questions Questions 10

The rule

This is the biggest surprise in beginner English. To ask a question or to say no about an ordinary verb, English does not move the verb — it puts do or does in front, and the main verb goes back to its plain form. Do you have a receipt? · She does not work today. Note what happens to the -s: it moves onto does and leaves the verb. be and can are the exceptions; they need no do.

Pattern

Do you work? · Does she work? | I do not work · She does not work

Examples

  1. Do you speak English?

  2. Does the bus stop here?

  3. I do not eat meat.

  4. She does not work on Friday.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Does she works here?

    Right: Does she work here?

The -s is already in does. The main verb loses it.

  • Wrong: Do you are ready?

    Right: Are you ready?

be makes its own question. It never takes do.
