The rule

A question that asks for information starts with the question word, and the rest of the question follows exactly as it would in a yes/no question. What is your name? · Where is the station? · When does the shop open? · How much is this? With be the verb simply follows; with an ordinary verb, do or does comes next.

Pattern

What is …? · Where is …? · When does …? · How much is …? · Who is …?

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Where the station is?

    Right: Where is the station?

    After the question word the verb still comes before the subject.

  • Wrong: When the shop opens?

    Right: When does the shop open?

    An ordinary verb still needs does.
