as big as

The rule

When two things are equal, English puts the plain adjective between as and as: My flat is as big as yours. When they are not, the negative form says so: It is not as expensive as I thought. Nothing changes on the adjective — no -er and no more.

Pattern

as + plain adjective + as · not as + plain adjective + as

Examples

  1. My flat is as big as yours.

  2. It is not as expensive as I thought.

  3. The bus is not as fast as the train.

  4. This one is just as good.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: It is as bigger as yours.

    Right: It is as big as yours.

    Between as and as the adjective is plain.

  • Wrong: It is not so expensive than I thought.

    Right: It is not as expensive as I thought.

    The second word is as, not than.
