Have you ever …?

The rule

To ask whether something has happened at any time in your life, English uses have/has + the third form of the verb: Have you ever been to London? I have never eaten it. The moment does not matter and is never given — as soon as you say when, you must switch to the past simple: I went there in 2019.

Pattern

have / has + been, done, seen, eaten … · ever in the question, never in the answer

Examples

  1. Have you ever been to England?

  2. I have never eaten this before.

  3. She has worked in three countries.

  4. We have seen that film twice.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Have you ever went to London?

    Right: Have you ever been to London?

    The third form of go is been or gone, not went.

  • Wrong: I have seen him yesterday.

    Right: I saw him yesterday.

    A stated time takes the past simple.
