The rule

nicht negates a verb, an adjective or a whole sentence. It goes at the END of a short sentence, but in FRONT of the thing it is denying: Ich komme nicht. versus Das ist nicht richtig.

Pattern

Ich komme nicht. · Das ist nicht richtig. · Ich verstehe das nicht.

  2. Die Heizung funktioniert nicht.

    The heating is not working.

  3. Das ist nicht richtig.

    That is not correct.

  4. Ich kann heute nicht kommen.

    I cannot come today.

    nicht for verbs and adjectives; kein in front of a noun.
