a, de, en

The rule

Three prepositions carry most of A0. a is movement towards and the time of an appointment. de is origin, possession and what something is made of. en is being inside or at a place, and the month or year. Two contractions are compulsory and never optional: a + el = al, de + el = del.

voy a Madrid · soy de Siria · vivo en Valencia · a + el = al · de + el = del

Examples

  1. Voy al centro en autobús.

    I go to the centre by bus.

  2. Soy de Marruecos.

    I am from Morocco.

  3. La clase es a las seis.

    The class is at six.

Keep in mind

  • al / del

    Compulsory: never "a el" or "de el".
