De regel

A2 leerde de bijzin die zegt WELKE: the man who lives next door. B1 voegt twee relatiefwoorden en één leestekenregel toe. whose toont bezit: the woman whose car was stolen. where verwijst naar een plaats: the town where I grew up. En een bijzin tussen komma’s geeft EXTRA informatie over iets wat al vaststaat: My brother, who lives in Rotterdam, is a nurse — ik heb maar één broer. Zonder komma’s zou het gaan om díe broer die daar woont. Een komma-bijzin gebruikt nooit that.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: The man which car is outside is waiting.

    Goed: The man whose car is outside is waiting.

    Bezit krijgt whose, zowel bij mensen als bij dingen.

  • Fout: This is the hospital that I was born.

    Goed: This is the hospital where I was born.

    Een plaats zonder voorzetsel krijgt where.

  • Fout: My mother, that lives in Cairo, is visiting.

    Goed: My mother, who lives in Cairo, is visiting.

    that wordt nooit gebruikt in een bijzin tussen komma’s.
