القاعدة

حين تنقل ما قاله شخص تكفّ الجملة عن أن تكون كلماته وتصبح كلماتك، فكل ما كان يشير إلى لحظته صار يشير إلى لحظتك. ويتراجع الفعل زمنًا واحدًا: المضارع يصير ماضيًا، والماضي ماضيًا تامًّا، وwill تصير would، وcan تصير could. وتتغير الضمائر تبعًا للمتكلم: ‏I am tired تصبح he said he was tired. وتتحرك كلمات الزمان والمكان أيضًا: ‏today تصير that day، وtomorrow تصير the next day، وhere تصير there. وsay لا تحتاج ذكر المخاطَب، أما tell فتحتاجه دائمًا: ‏he said that … مقابل he told me that ….

أمثلة

  1. He said that he was tired.

    قال إنه متعب.

  2. She told me she had already paid.

    قالت لي إنها دفعت بالفعل.

  3. They said they would call the next day.

    قالوا إنهم سيتصلون في اليوم التالي.

  4. The doctor said I could go home.

    قال الطبيب إن بإمكاني العودة إلى البيت.

أخطاء شائعة

  • خطأ: He said me that he was late.

    صحيح: He told me that he was late.

    say لا تأخذ مخاطَبًا، وtell تتطلبه.

  • خطأ: She said she is tired.

    صحيح: She said she was tired.

    يتراجع الفعل المنقول زمنًا واحدًا.

  • خطأ: He said he will come tomorrow.

    صحيح: He said he would come the next day.

    will تصير would وتتحرك tomorrow معها.

    تبقى must not كما هي في الكلام المنقول.

    tell + المخاطَب ثم الجملة المنقولة.

    يتحوّل المضارع التام في كلامه إلى الماضي التام.
