The rule

This is not a new rule — it is the same rule. If you begin the sentence with something other than the subject, such as vandaag or om acht uur, the verb still has to be in second position. So the subject moves to after the verb. Ik werk vandaag becomes Vandaag werk ik. Nothing is added to the sentence; only the order changes.

Pattern

Ik werk vandaag. → Vandaag WERK ik.

Examples

  1. Vandaag werk ik.

    Today I am working.

  2. Morgen ga ik naar de dokter.

    Tomorrow I am going to the doctor.

  3. Om acht uur begint de les.

    The lesson starts at eight.

  4. Daarna ga ik naar huis.

    After that I go home.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Vandaag ik werk.

    Right: Vandaag werk ik.

    The verb must stay second, so the subject moves behind it.
