The rule

To say what you do something for, you use om ... te with the verb in its plain form. Ik ga naar de winkel om brood te kopen. The little word om opens the piece, te stands directly before the verb, and that verb does not change. With a separable verb, te goes inside it: om mee te doen, om op te halen. You can also use om ... te after te and genoeg: te moe om te koken.

    I am going to the shop to buy bread.

  2. Ik bel om een afspraak te maken.

    I am calling to make an appointment.

  3. Ik kom om het pakket op te halen.

    I am coming to collect the parcel.

  4. Ik ben te moe om te koken.

    I am too tired to cook.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Ik ga naar de winkel om koop brood.

    Right: Ik ga naar de winkel om brood te kopen.

    After om comes te + the plain form.

  • Wrong: Ik kom om op te het pakket halen.

    Right: Ik kom om het pakket op te halen.

    With ophalen, te goes between op and halen.
