The rule

Words like omdat, dat, als, of and toen begin a subordinate clause, and in a subordinate clause the verb goes to the end. Ik kom niet, want ik ben ziek is two ordinary clauses; Ik kom niet omdat ik ziek ben has a subordinate clause, which is why ben stands last. If there are two verbs, both go to the end: ... omdat ik moet werken. This is the rule that goes wrong most often, and these are exactly the sentences you want to be able to say.

Pattern

hoofdzin + OMDAT + onderwerp + rest + WERKWOORD

Examples

  1. Ik kom niet omdat ik ziek ben.

    I am not coming because I am ill.

  2. Ik weet dat de winkel om negen uur opengaat.

    I know that the shop opens at nine.

  3. Als het regent, blijf ik thuis.

    If it rains, I stay at home.

  4. Ik bel u omdat ik een afspraak wil maken.

    I am calling you because I want to make an appointment.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Ik kom niet omdat ik ben ziek.

    Right: Ik kom niet omdat ik ziek ben.

    After omdat the verb goes to the end.

  • Wrong: Ik denk dat het is goed.

    Right: Ik denk dat het goed is.

    After dat the verb is at the end too.
