The rule

To ask politely or to report a question, you put the question in a subordinate clause. A yes-no question then starts with of: "Weet u of de bus rijdt?" A question with a question word keeps that word: "Ik weet niet wanneer de brief komt." In both cases the verb goes to the end and you do not invert.

Pattern

Weet u OF / WAAR / WANNEER + … + WERKWOORD ?

  1. Weet u of de apotheek nog open is?

    Do you know whether the chemist is still open?

  2. Ik weet niet hoeveel het kost.

    I do not know how much it costs.

  3. Kunt u mij zeggen waar ik moet zijn?

    Could you tell me where I need to be?

  4. Zij vroeg wanneer ik terugkwam.

    She asked when I was coming back.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Weet u waar is de balie?

    Right: Weet u waar de balie is?

    In the subordinate clause the verb stands last.

  • Wrong: Ik weet niet als de bus rijdt.

    Right: Ik weet niet of de bus rijdt.

    A yes-no question starts with of.
