The rule

When you add a second point, the shape depends on what you are adding. as well as and apart from take a noun or an -ing form: As well as working, she studies. in addition and besides open a new sentence and take a comma: The rent is high. In addition, the heating is not included. both … and and not only … but also balance two things of the same kind, so the words on each side must match: not only cheap but also fast, never not only cheap but also it is fast.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: As well as she works, she studies.

    Right: As well as working, she studies.

    as well as takes an -ing form, not a clause.

  • Wrong: The rent is high, in addition the heating is extra.

    Right: The rent is high. In addition, the heating is extra.

    in addition opens a new sentence and takes a comma.

  • Wrong: She is not only a nurse but also she teaches.

    Right: She is not only a nurse but also a teacher.

    The two halves of not only … but also must be the same kind of phrase.
