English grammar

When -ing and to mean different things

B2 · Upper intermediate Verbs and time Questions 10

The rule

Some verbs take both forms and the two mean different things. Remember to lock it is the task ahead; remember locking it is the memory behind. Stop to read means you stopped in order to read; stop reading means you gave it up. Try to open is an attempt at something hard; try opening is an experiment worth a go. Regret to inform is the formal apology before bad news; regret telling is the wish you had not. Go on to is the next thing; go on -ing is the same thing continuing.
