The rule

German has five plural endings and no reliable rule about which noun takes which, so the plural is learned with the word — that is why every card here shows it. What IS reliable: the article is always die, and many one-syllable words add an umlaut.

Pattern

-e: Tische · -er: Kinder · -(e)n: Frauen · -s: Handys · –: Zimmer

Examples

  1. Ich habe zwei Kinder.

    I have two children.

  2. Zwei Brötchen, bitte.

    Two rolls, please.

  3. Die Öffnungszeiten stehen an der Tür.

    The opening hours are on the door.

  4. Wir sind vier Personen.

    We are four people.

Keep in mind

  • das Kind → die Kinder · das Zimmer → die Zimmer

    Some words do not change at all; only the article tells you.
