der, die, das

The rule

Every German noun has one of three articles and you cannot work out which from the meaning: der Tisch, die Tür, das Fenster are all furniture. So learn the article WITH the word, never the word alone — that is why every card in this course says der Tisch, not Tisch. In the plural all three become die.

    The table is made of wood.

  2. Die Tür ist offen.

    The door is open.

  3. Das Fenster ist schmutzig.

    The window is dirty.

  4. Die Kinder sind in der Schule.

    The children are at school.

Keep in mind

  • das Mädchen

    Neuter, although it means a girl: every -chen word is das.
