Zorg Spaceals or wenn: two words for "when"
als oder wenn?
The rule
Both translate as "when", and both send the verb to the end. als is for ONE event or period in the past: Als wir in Hamburg ankamen, regnete es. wenn is for the present and the future, and for things that happened again and again in the past (often with immer): Wenn ich Zeit habe, koche ich. Immer wenn es regnete, spielten wir drinnen. The question word "when?" is a third word: wann.

Als wir in Hamburg ankamen, regnete es.
When we arrived in Hamburg, it was raining.
Als meine Tochter geboren wurde, waren wir sehr glücklich.
When my daughter was born, we were very happy.
Wenn ich Zeit habe, rufe ich meine Mutter an.
When I have time, I call my mother.
Immer wenn wir Oma besuchten, backte sie einen Kuchen.
Whenever we visited Grandma, she baked a cake.
