The rule

Both say that something happens IN SPITE OF something else, but they build the sentence differently. obwohl starts a side clause, so its verb goes to the END: Ich gehe arbeiten, obwohl ich krank bin. trotzdem is an adverb in the main clause, so the verb comes right after it: Ich bin krank. Trotzdem gehe ich arbeiten. (or: …, aber ich gehe trotzdem arbeiten.)

  1. Obwohl es regnet, spielen die Kinder draußen.

    Although it is raining, the children are playing outside.

  2. Er kommt, obwohl er wenig Zeit hat.

    He is coming although he has little time.

  3. Die Wohnung ist teuer. Trotzdem nehmen wir sie.

    The flat is expensive. We are taking it anyway.

  4. Ich war müde, aber ich habe trotzdem gelernt.

    I was tired, but I studied anyway.

    obwohl pushes its verb to the end; trotzdem pulls the verb right behind it.
