The rule

Four words turn single sentences into speech: y (and), o (or), pero (but) and porque (because). Two spelling rules go with them: y becomes e before a word starting with i- or hi- (padres e hijos), and o becomes u before o- or ho-. And porque as one word answers the question that por qué as two words asks.

  3. Estudio español porque vivo aquí.
