Spanish grammar

The present perfect

A1 · Beginner Verbs and time Questions 10

The rule

The everyday spoken past in Spain. Take haber — he, has, ha, hemos, han — and add the participle: -ar verbs give -ado, -er and -ir verbs give -ido. He trabajado, has comido, ha vivido. Use it for anything inside a period that has not closed: today, this week, this month, this year, and "ever in my life". The two words are never separated: you say no he comido, never he no comido.

Pattern

he / has / ha / hemos / han + -ado, -ido

Examples

  1. Hoy he trabajado mucho.

I have worked a lot today.

  2. Esta semana hemos comido fuera dos veces.

This week we have eaten out twice.

  3. ¿Has vivido alguna vez en el extranjero?

    Have you ever lived abroad?

Keep in mind

  • No he comido nada.

The negative goes in front of haber, never between the two words.
