The rule

Spanish has six subject pronouns — and it usually leaves them out. The verb ending already says who is speaking, so hablo on its own means "I speak" and adding yo only adds emphasis. Learn them so you recognise them; do not sprinkle them into every sentence.

Pattern

yo · tú / usted · él / ella · nosotros · ustedes · ellos / ellas

Examples

  1. Yo soy de Siria. ¿Y tú?

    I am from Syria. And you?

  2. Ella trabaja en el hospital.

    She works at the hospital.

  3. Nosotros vivimos en Sevilla.

    We live in Seville.

Keep in mind

  • Hablo español.

    No yo needed — the -o ending already means "I".
