tú and usted

The rule

Spanish has two words for "you". tú is for friends, family, children and classmates. usted is for strangers, officials, older people and anyone at work — and it takes the SAME verb form as él/ella, which is what makes it easy to miss: "¿Cómo se llama?" is polite, not third person. Getting this wrong is not a grammar mistake, it is a social one.

Keep in mind

  • ustedes

    The plural "you" everywhere in Latin America, and the polite plural in Spain. Spain also uses vosotros among friends; this course teaches ustedes, which works everywhere.
