The rule

Seven words carry almost every question a beginner asks: qué, quién, dónde, cuándo, cuánto, cómo, por qué. Every one of them takes a WRITTEN ACCENT when it asks a question — that accent is what makes it a question word, and without it qué becomes que ("that") and dónde becomes a relative. cuánto also agrees with what it counts: ¿Cuántos hermanos? ¿Cuántas horas?
