Spanish grammar

Negation with no

A0 · Starter Saying no Questions 10

The rule

Spanish negation is one word in one place: no goes directly before the verb. No hablo español. No me gusta. Nothing else moves and nothing is added. When someone asks you a yes/no question, the answer is often No, no ... — the first no answers, the second one negates.

Pattern

no + verbo

Examples

  1. No entiendo.

    I do not understand.

  2. No tengo coche.

I do not have a car.

  3. No, no hablo mucho español.

No, I do not speak much Spanish.

Keep in mind

  • nunca / no ... nunca

Nunca llego tarde and no llego nunca tarde both mean the same.
