De regel

Het Engels heeft geen enkele toekomende tijd; het heeft drie manieren om vooruit te kijken en u kiest op betekenis. will is voor een besluit dat u nu neemt, een aanbod, een belofte of een neutrale voorspelling: I will get it. going to is voor een voornemen dat u al had, of een voorspelling met zichtbaar bewijs: Look at those clouds — it is going to rain. De present continuous is voor een afspraak met iemand anders die al vastligt: I am seeing the doctor at four. Alle drie kunnen kloppen bij dezelfde gebeurtenis; ze zeggen er iets anders over.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: I think it will rain — look at that sky.

    Goed: I think it is going to rain — look at that sky.

    Met zichtbaar bewijs is going to de natuurlijke keuze.

  • Fout: The phone is ringing. I am going to answer it.

    Goed: The phone is ringing. I will answer it.

    Een besluit dat u nu neemt, krijgt will.

  • Fout: I will meet Sara at six; we arranged it yesterday.

    Goed: I am meeting Sara at six; we arranged it yesterday.

    Een al gemaakte afspraak met iemand krijgt de present continuous.
