De regel

If is maar één manier om een voorwaarde te verbinden, en de andere zijn preciezer. Unless betekent behalve als. Provided that, as long as en on condition that stellen een eis. Otherwise noemt het gevolg van niet voldoen. In case is geen voorwaarde maar een voorzorg vooraf.

Voorbeelden

  1. I will sign on Friday provided that the survey is clear.

    Ik teken vrijdag mits het onderzoek schoon is.

  2. Unless we hear otherwise, we will assume the meeting is on.

    Tenzij we iets anders horen, gaan we ervan uit dat de vergadering doorgaat.

  3. Take the receipt in case they ask for proof.

    Neem de bon mee voor het geval ze een bewijs vragen.

  4. Confirm by Thursday; otherwise the room will be released.

    Bevestig voor donderdag; anders komt de zaal vrij.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: Take an umbrella unless it rains.

    Goed: Take an umbrella in case it rains.

    in case is een voorzorg vooraf; unless is een voorwaarde.

  • Fout: I will come unless I do not finish early.

    Goed: I will come if I finish early.

    unless draagt al de ontkenning; een tweede draait de betekenis om.

  • Fout: Providing that you will pay by Friday, I will hold it.

    Goed: Providing that you pay by Friday, I will hold it.

    Een voorwaardelijke bijzin krijgt de tegenwoordige tijd, geen will.
