De regel

Doel en gevolg lijken op elkaar en gedragen zich anders. Doel kijkt vooruit: so as to avoid, in order to, so that … can. Gevolg kijkt terug: so heavy that, such a long delay that. Let op: so bij een bijvoeglijk naamwoord, such bij een naamwoordgroep.

Voorbeelden

  1. We wrote twice so as to have it on record.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: It was so a long delay that we cancelled.

    Goed: It was such a long delay that we cancelled.

    such staat voor een naamwoordgroep; so voor een los bijvoeglijk naamwoord.

  • Fout: We rang early so as to not miss him.

    Goed: We rang early so as not to miss him.

    De ontkenning staat vóór to.

  • Fout: We wrote twice for to have it on record.

    Goed: We wrote twice so as to have it on record.

    for to bestaat niet; gebruik so as to of in order to.
