Agreement in awkward cases

القاعدة

يتطابق الفاعل والفعل عادة في الشكل، لكن الإنجليزية تتبع المعنى أحيانًا. الأسماء الجمعية (team وcommittee) تأخذ فعلًا مفردًا حين تُعدّ وحدة، وفي البريطانية جمعًا حين يُنظر إلى أفرادها. وpolice وstaff جمع. وa number of مع الجمع ← فعل جمع، وthe number of ← مفرد. وeach / neither of ← مفرد رسميًّا، وmore than one ← مفرد، والمقدار ككل ← مفرد. وnews وphysics وthe Netherlands مفردة.

    عشرة كيلومترات مسافة طويلة جدًّا للمشي مع طفل.

أخطاء شائعة

  • خطأ: The number of complaints have risen.

    صحيح: The number of complaints has risen.

    the number of تأخذ فعلًا مفردًا.

  • خطأ: The police is investigating.

    صحيح: The police are investigating.

    police تأخذ دائمًا فعلًا جمعًا.

  • خطأ: More than one passenger were injured.

    صحيح: More than one passenger was injured.

    more than one مع اسم مفرد تأخذ فعلًا مفردًا.
