De regel

Onderwerp en werkwoord congrueren meestal naar vorm, maar soms naar betekenis. Collectieve woorden (team, committee) krijgen een enkelvoud als eenheid en in Brits Engels vaak een meervoud als individuen. police en staff zijn meervoud. a number of + meervoud → meervoud; the number of → enkelvoud. each / neither of → enkelvoud (formeel); more than one → enkelvoud; een bedrag als geheel → enkelvoud. news, physics, the Netherlands zijn enkelvoud.

Voorbeelden

  1. A number of residents have complained about the noise.

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Fout: The number of complaints have risen.

    Goed: The number of complaints has risen.

    the number of krijgt een enkelvoudig werkwoord.

  • Fout: The police is investigating.

    Goed: The police are investigating.

    police krijgt altijd een meervoudig werkwoord.

  • Fout: More than one passenger were injured.

    Goed: More than one passenger was injured.

    more than one + enkelvoud krijgt een enkelvoudig werkwoord.
