The rule

Some verbs come in two pieces: opstaan, meegaan, invullen, opbellen, afzeggen. In an ordinary sentence the first piece goes to the END: Ik sta om zeven uur op. But when there is already a second verb — after kunnen, moeten, willen — the word stays whole: Ik moet het formulier invullen.

Pattern

opstaan → Ik sta om zeven uur OP. | Ik moet OPSTAAN.

Examples

  1. Ik sta om zeven uur op.

    I get up at seven.

  2. Ik bel u morgen op.

    I will call you tomorrow.

  3. Ik moet het formulier invullen.

    I have to fill in the form.

  4. Ik wil een klacht indienen.

    I want to file a complaint.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Ik opsta om zeven uur.

    Right: Ik sta om zeven uur op.

    Without a second verb the prefix goes to the end.
