The rule

mijn, jouw/je, uw, zijn, haar, ons/onze, jullie, hun. Only one of them changes with the noun after it: ons before a het-word (ons huis), onze before a de-word and before every plural (onze buurman, onze kinderen). The others never change.

Pattern

ons huis (het) · onze buurman (de) · onze kinderen (meervoud)

Examples

  1. Mijn naam is Sara.

    My name is Sara.

  2. Is dit jouw jas?

    Is this your coat?

  3. Ons huis staat in de Kerkstraat.

    Our house is in Kerkstraat.

  4. Onze kinderen gaan naar school.

    Our children go to school.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: onze huis

    Right: ons huis

    huis is a het-word, so ons.
