The rule

With hoewel you concede something and the other thing happens anyway. Hoewel het duur is, laten we het toch repareren. After hoewel comes a subordinate clause: the verb goes to the end. If the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause starts with its verb. Note: hoewel and maar do the same job, so you do not use them together.

Pattern

HOEWEL + onderwerp + … + WERKWOORD , hoofdzin

Examples

  1. Hoewel het duur is, laten we het toch repareren.

    Subordinate clause first → main clause starts with laten.

  2. Ik ga werken, hoewel ik nog niet helemaal beter ben.

    Subordinate clause last: verb at the end.

  3. Hoewel de brief te laat kwam, is het bezwaar behandeld.

    With a passive main clause.

  4. Hij tekent niet, hoewel hij het eens is.

    Conceding and still not doing it.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Hoewel het regende, maar we gingen toch.

    Right: Hoewel het regende, gingen we toch.

    hoewel and maar together is doubled up.

  • Wrong: Hoewel het is duur, repareren we het.

    Right: Hoewel het duur is, repareren we het.

    In the subordinate clause the verb goes last.
