The rule

With als you state the condition under which something holds. If it can really happen, use ordinary tenses: Als u vandaag betaalt, is het op tijd. If it is not the case, step one tense back and use zou: Als ik meer tijd had, zou ik bezwaar maken. After als comes a subordinate clause, and dan at the head of the main clause is possible but not required.

Pattern

ALS + onderwerp + … + WERKWOORD , (DAN) + werkwoord + onderwerp

Examples

  1. Als u vandaag betaalt, is het nog op tijd.

    Real condition: ordinary tenses.

  2. Als ik meer tijd had, zou ik bezwaar maken.

    Unreal: had + zou.

  3. Als het niet lukt, bel ik u meteen.

    Without dan, also fine.

  4. Als ik u was, zou ik het schriftelijk vragen.

    A set phrase for giving advice.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: Als u vandaag betaalt, het is nog op tijd.

    Right: Als u vandaag betaalt, is het nog op tijd.

    After the clause the main clause starts with the verb.

  • Wrong: Als ik meer tijd heb, zou ik bezwaar maken.

    Right: Als ik meer tijd had, zou ik bezwaar maken.

    zou pairs with the past tense in the als clause.
