The rule

sein is the first verb you need and the least regular one in the language. Learn the six forms as six words; nothing about them is predictable from sein.

Pattern

ich bin · du bist · er/sie/es ist · wir sind · ihr seid · sie/Sie sind

Examples

  1. Ich bin müde.

    I am tired.

  2. Bist du krank?

    Are you ill?

  3. Mein Sohn ist sechs Jahre alt.

    My son is six years old.

  4. Wir sind vier Personen.

    We are four people.

Keep in mind

  • Ich bin Farah. · Ich habe Fieber.

    German uses sein for who you are and haben for what you have — including a fever.
