The rule

nicht nur … sondern auch adds a second thing: Sie spricht nicht nur Arabisch, sondern auch Türkisch. entweder … oder gives two choices: Wir fahren entweder mit dem Bus oder mit dem Zug. sondern ("but rather") CORRECTS after a negative: Das ist nicht mein Handy, sondern deins. aber only adds a contrast and keeps both: Das Handy ist alt, aber es funktioniert.

Examples

  1. Mein Sohn spielt nicht nur Fußball, sondern auch Basketball.

    My son plays not only football but also basketball.

  2. Wir treffen uns entweder am Freitag oder am Samstag.

    We will meet either on Friday or on Saturday.

  3. Ich komme nicht heute, sondern morgen.

    I am coming not today but tomorrow.

  4. Die Wohnung ist klein, aber sehr hell.

    The flat is small, but very bright.

Keep in mind

  • nicht teuer, sondern billig · teuer, aber gut

    sondern replaces what was denied; aber keeps both and contrasts them.
