하고 · 와 / 과

The rule

하고 joins two nouns and never changes: 밥하고 국, 커피하고 차. 와 and 과 do the same job in writing and pick themselves by 받침 — 과 after a consonant, 와 after a vowel. 하고 also means "with": 친구하고 만나요.

Pattern

명사 + 하고 + 명사 · 명사 + 와 / 과 + 명사

Examples

  1. 숟가락하고 젓가락 주세요.

    A spoon and chopsticks, please.

  2. 은행과 카페 사이에 있어요.

    It is between the bank and the café.

  3. 친구하고 놀아요.

    I hang out with a friend.

  • 은행과

    은행 ends in a consonant → 과

  • 카페와

    카페 ends in a vowel → 와
