The rule

You cannot count a Korean noun directly. Between the number and the thing sits a counter, and the noun comes first: 사과 세 개, not 세 개 사과. 개 is the all-purpose one for objects, 명 for people, 잔 for cups, 병 for bottles, 장 for flat things, 마리 for animals, 켤레 for pairs of shoes.

Pattern

명사 + 숫자 + 단위 명사

  1. 커피 한 잔 주세요.

    One coffee, please.

  2. 표 두 장 주세요.

    Two tickets, please.

  3. 학생이 다섯 명 있어요.

    There are five students.
