The rule

Korean has two complete sets of numbers and they are not interchangeable. The native set (하나, 둘, 셋) counts things, people, ages and hours. The Sino-Korean set (일, 이, 삼) does money, minutes, months, dates, floors and phone numbers. Which one you use is decided by the counter, not by you — and the clock uses both at once: 두 시 삼십 분.

Pattern

하나 둘 셋 … (고유어) · 일 이 삼 … (한자어)

Examples

  1. 사과 세 개 주세요.

    Three apples, please.

  2. 오천 원이에요.

    It is 5,000 won.

  3. 두 시 삼십 분이에요.

    It is half past two.

Keep in mind

    things → native

  • 삼 층

    the hour is native, the minute is Sino
