이 / 그 / 저

The rule

Korean splits "that" in two. 이 is near me, 그 is near you or already mentioned, 저 is away from both of us. In front of a noun they stay short — 이 사람, 그 책, 저 건물 — and on their own they become 이거, 그거, 저거.

Pattern

이 + 명사 · 그 + 명사 · 저 + 명사 · 이거 / 그거 / 저거

Examples

  1. 이 사람은 제 친구예요.

    This person is my friend.

  2. 그거 주세요.

    Give me that one.

  3. 저 건물 뒤에 있어요.

    It is behind that building over there.

Keep in mind

  • 이거

    in my hand

  • 그거

    in yours, or the one we just spoke about

  • 저거

    over there, away from both
