The particle 에 — where and when

에

The rule

에 marks where something IS and where you are going TO, and it marks a point in time. 학교에 가요, 집에 있어요, 세 시에 만나요. It does not mark where an action happens — that is 에서, and telling the two apart is the single most useful thing in this section.

Pattern

장소 + 에 가다 / 오다 / 있다 · 시간 + 에

Examples

  1. 학교에 가요.

    I go to school.

  2. 가방 안에 있어요.

    It is in the bag.

  3. 일곱 시에 일어나요.

    I get up at seven.
