The particle 에서 — where it happens

The rule

에서 marks the place an action happens, and the place something comes from. 도서관에서 공부해요 — the studying happens there. 미국에서 왔어요 — I came from there. The test is simple: if the verb is 있다, 없다, 가다 or 오다 as a destination, use 에; otherwise use 에서.

Pattern

장소 + 에서 + 동사 · 장소 + 에서 오다

Examples

  1. 도서관에서 공부해요.

    I study at the library.

  2. 마트에서 우유를 사요.

    I buy milk at the supermarket.

  3. 다음 역에서 내려요.

    I get off at the next station.
