The rule

Korean has no prepositions. Where English puts "on" in front, Korean puts a noun behind: 책상 위 is "the desk’s top". Then 에 marks it as a place. So 책상 위에 책이 있어요 — literally "at the desk’s top a book exists". The order never changes: thing, position word, 에.

Pattern

명사 + 위 / 아래 / 앞 / 뒤 / 옆 / 안 / 밖 / 사이 + 에

Examples

  1. 책상 위에 책이 있어요.

    There is a book on the desk.

  2. 약국 옆에 편의점이 있어요.

    There is a shop next to the pharmacy.

  3. 은행과 카페 사이에 있어요.

    It is between the bank and the café.

Keep in mind

  • 책상 위에

    the position word comes AFTER the noun

  • 위에 책상

    wrong — that is "a desk on top"
