The rule

One o'clock is singular — es la una — and everything else is plural: son las tres. Minutes past are joined with y, minutes to with menos: son las nueve y cuarto, son las ocho menos cuarto. To say WHEN something happens, use a: la clase es a las seis.

Pattern

Examples

  1. ¿Qué hora es? Son las siete y media.

    What time is it? It is half past seven.

  2. La clase empieza a las seis en punto.

    The class starts at six o'clock exactly.

  3. Tengo cita a las diez y media.

    I have an appointment at half past ten.

Keep in mind

  • las tres y media

    Spanish counts FORWARD: this is 3:30, not 2:30.
