cuando and si

The rule

cuando is "when" and si is "if". At A1 both take the ordinary present when they point at the future: si llueve, nos quedamos en casa, cuando llego a casa, te llamo. The one thing to hold on to: si NEVER takes a future tense in Spanish — si lloverá is wrong, and so is the English habit of saying "if it will rain". Also keep si (if) apart from sí (yes): the accent is the whole difference.

Examples

  1. Si llueve, nos quedamos en casa.

    If it rains, we will stay at home.

  2. Cuando llegue el técnico, te aviso.

    When the technician arrives, I will let you know.

  3. Si no mejoro, vuelvo el viernes.

    If I do not get better, I will come back on Friday.

Keep in mind

  • si / sí

    Without the accent it is "if"; with it, "yes".
