The rule

Four words that let you stop speaking in single sentences. porque gives the reason and never starts a sentence: no voy porque trabajo. por qué with two words and an accent is the QUESTION — the pair is worth getting right once. pero contrasts: es caro pero está muy bien. aunque concedes: aunque llueve, salimos. así que gives the consequence: no había sitio, así que me fui.

  1. No voy porque mañana trabajo.

    I am not going because I work tomorrow.

  2. Es caro, pero el barrio está muy bien.

    It is expensive, but the neighbourhood is very good.

  3. No había sitio, así que me fui a casa.

    There was no room, so I went home.
